It wasn’t until I moved to NYC that I truly felt like a minority. Coming from a Tongan/Chinese background and having been born in Hawaii, I was shocked when I found out that Pacific Islanders only make up 0.1% of NYC’s population – a statistic that made me feel like I should be added to some sort of “endangered species list.” Fortunately, Gotham is so diverse that even this small town Polynesian girl can find somewhere to belong in the city. From similarities to differences, here’s how my hometown of Hawaii and New York City match up.
